Tire and auto repair businesses thrive when built on strong relationships, quality service, and a commitment to innovation. As the industry evolves, independent shop owners must navigate challenges like digital marketing, customer engagement, and network expansion to stay competitive. How can tire dealers and repair shops align with a trusted organization to drive growth while maintaining their core values?
According to Tim Szabo, Ian McDonald, Matt Vanderhorst, Dave Antoniuk, Graham Tanner, Ryan Lien, Joe Paranich, and James O’Reilly, who participated in the Trail Tire Annual General Meeting 2025, success in the tire and auto repair industry comes from being part of a supportive and visionary network. Trail Tire’s leadership and members emphasize the importance of collaboration, transparency, and customer-first values, offering independent dealers the tools and resources they need to compete. Through shared expertise, managed growth, and new business opportunities — such as expanding into truck accessories — Trail Tire provides an ideal framework for business owners looking to scale while retaining their local, community-driven identity.
On this episode of Gain Traction, Mike Edge welcomes Tim, Ian, Matt, Dave, Graham, Ryan, Joe, and James to discuss the culture of Trail Tire, the benefits of joining a strong network, and how the company is shaping the future of independent tire dealers. They explore leadership philosophies, business expansion strategies, and the role of innovation in customer service. Whether you’re a tire dealer or an industry professional, this episode offers insights into building a thriving, resilient business.

01:49
All right folks, we’re here with Tim Szabo. Welcome to the Game Traction podcast. Tim.
01:54
Happy to be here, Mike.
01:55
Yeah. So this show, Trail Tire, is this your first or.
02:00
This is my first AGM in eight years actually.
02:02
Wow.
02:03
But such a beautiful, picturesque place in Canada, at home with all my family. I couldn’t miss out on this one.
02:10
No. This place is unbelievable. Lake Louise. Yeah. I had a buddy of mine tell me that drove through here in the summer when he was RV in. He said this is a 10 out of 10 place you have to visit on the planet.
02:19
Easily 10 out of 10. Yeah. It really goes to show what a class act Trail Tire is to belong to this family and to get this kind of treatment.
02:27
Well, that’s what I was thinking. You know, first of all, I admire this organization that I’ve gotten to know just recently with you guys. But what made you want to be a part of Trail Tire with your stores?
02:37
You know, Alan Al Ambrosi, Trail Tire, he, himself and his family and their culture and what they’re trying to build here with honest hard work, you know, you won’t find anybody here that doesn’t work behind the counter of their store, that doesn’t talk to their customers personally, doesn’t share with the ups and downs of their employees. And to me, money comes and goes. You can always make more money, but you can’t make more family. You know, you can’t make people better. You just have to align yourself with good people to begin with.
03:10
Well, it’s interesting, in life, I’ve always noticed this. You can’t, you can’t even develop the whole I care attitude. You either have I care or you don’t.
03:20
Absolutely.
03:20
And when you find it’s almost like, hey, I got to hold on to that.
03:23
Absolutely. Hang on to it. Everything you have.
03:26
Yeah. Whatever that person is in your life that, you know, it could be could, you know, just a friend that’s outside of business. That person is important.
03:36
Yeah. You know that’s the Trail Tire family. They, they want to help. They want to be there. They’re very active. There’s no one that you can’t call that won’t answer their phone at all times of the night. You know, James Cashin’s our rep at our store. I can call him at 11 o’clock on a Sunday night and he’s going to answer or call me back if I woke him up, you know, and that’s. That, that means a lot when you’re a store owner that survives on the strength of the flagship that you’re with. So if you want to be strong, you want to be a Trail tire. That’s what I know.
04:07
That is a strong point to end on. We’ll just, we’ll stop there. But, Tim, thanks for being part of the podcast.
04:11
You bet you, Mike. Hope to be on here one time again when with my own fame, we’ll do it.
04:22
All right, folks, I’m here with Ian McDonald at the Trail Tire 2025 AGM.
04:28
Thanks for having me.
04:29
Hey, glad to have. We’ve been talking the last couple days, but tell the audience and tell myself again, I mean, why are you part of Trail Tire?
04:37
Well, it’s a, it’s a very long story. We don’t have time for today, but basically it’s a partnership that just basically helps improve my business and help me make more money at what I’m doing and do it better.
04:48
We might have a little time. Let’s, let’s talk about how you got your first tire story. Your, you had a flat tire. Yeah.
04:56
So I was working an oil field job, driving a half ton around, checking oil wells, and went to the local shop with a tire that was going low, my tire was going low. And the guy asked me, hey, do you want to buy a tire shop? And it’s the most random things, like I’m a very random situation in my life guy. And so he asked if I want to buy a tire shop and four months later I was running it by myself.
05:19
I think that’s one of the funniest stories that I’ve heard. I mean, I’ve been doing this a while and I’ve obviously interviewed quite a few people, but that might be the absolute most random way of getting in the tire. The tire business.
05:29
Yeah. It’s like I wasn’t pursuing the tire business per se, but I always was entrepreneurial and wanted to do my own thing. And I was a car guy, mechanically inclined, so it just was a natural fit. When the question came, I’m like, you know what, this might actually be something.
05:43
I think it’s funny because I think God works in a unique way sometimes. It’s like, hey, Bamboy, how about this one?
05:49
Yeah, well, like I was listening to a past podcast of yours and you talked about the gentleman who left a note on the ladies dash saying, hey, I think you’re beautiful, call me. I said, that’s my whole life is random. Like that meeting my wife, you know her, she played softball in high school and her high school coach was a son in law of a guy I worked with. And we ended up on the same slow pitch team. And from there it was a roller coaster of deciding if she liked me or not. And three years later were married.
06:16
So I love that story. I love it. Well, if you had to tell anybody else why they should be part of trail tire that might be sitting on the fence out there that you guys, I know you’re growing, I know you’re probably talking to a wide range of people, but what’s ultimately what’s the biggest selling point you think? The family.
06:36
You’re not alone. Yeah, that’s the biggest thing is when you’re independent, you can be on an island sometimes and it’s like you build a bridge to your island with this group and now you’re part of an interconnected web of so many people. And like these conferences we’re at, the conversations and the camaraderie, it’s guys like minded doing the same things, going through the same good and bad that you’re going through.
06:59
Yeah.
07:00
And Trail Tire is down to earth guys. They’re not big, corporate, stuffy guys in a suit that are too big to talk to the little owner.
07:07
Yep.
07:07
I can go talk to Alan or Brad, which are the owners of the company, anytime I want. They’re available. You know, you might have to leave them a message, but they’ll get back to you. Yeah, it’s that. It’s that interconnected that anyone from the bottom up is available.
07:21
We’ll leave it on that note. Well said. And thanks for being part of the Gain Traction Podcast, Ian.
07:25
Thanks for having me, Mike.
07:32
All right, folks, I’m here with Matt Vanderhorst. Matt, welcome to the Gain Traction Podcast.
07:37
Thanks, Mike. Appreciate you having me here.
07:38
Yeah. So this Trail Tire AGM is pretty incredible, especially here at Lake Louise.
07:44
Yeah, it really is. It’s. I was celebrating with Alan last night on just how far the group’s come and evolved, and it’s a real privilege.
07:52
To be here, man. Almost feels like you guys are launching, like, a big thing here because it’s like the enthusiasm, I can tell with the people I’ve talked to. And, yeah, just you got so much going on, and I can tell the growth and stopping here.
08:05
It certainly isn’t, you know, and I. I jumped on pretty early on. I don’t know exactly which, but Alan had his. His corporate stores in Edmonton, and I was the first three associate stores outside of his group.
08:17
Congratulations. That’s awesome.
08:19
Yeah. Yeah. We left a relationship with Tirecraft that was over 50 years to make this change. And I was attracted to the energy, the vision, the quality of people that were involved. And it’s been an absolute privilege to see Allen’s vision and James vision, the whole group’s kind of plan come to fruition.
08:40
It’s really cool. And then, you know, I noticed the other thing recently. I think it’s the merger you guys did with the truck accessories.
08:48
Yeah, yeah. I’m still learning about that. But I think, you know, that’s a great testament to this group’s appetite to really give the dealers so many opportunities to. To expand into different segments and. And thrive, find your niche and. And do cool things.
09:05
Well, I mean, you know, Canada is a beautiful country. I mean, this is my first experience and first experience in Alberta. But, I mean, I can see where truck accessories would be a very valuable piece of business, just because you’re probably going to need something in the truck accessory market if you live here.
09:24
It certainly is. And the customers that tend to buy that stuff, especially the commercial work customers, they’re breaking it, wearing it out. And it’s on a constant cycle of rinse and repeat. Buy more. So it’s a great segment for sure.
09:38
That’s awesome. Anything you’d like to tell the audience that, you know, if someone were to sit on the fence and they’re thinking whether they should be part of Trail Tire, what’s the biggest takeaway you’d give them?
09:48
Yeah, I think, you know, I still see the same thing that I saw early on. The quality of people that are involved, the vision, the excitement and the energy to just keep, you know, bigger, better. You know, let’s expand, let’s see how far we can go. There isn’t another banner network in Canada that has this vision and has this amount of energy behind it. So if you’re on the fence, come hang out with us. There’s a difference.
10:14
Well, Matt, thanks for being part of the Game Traction podcast. I appreciate it. You’re welcome.
10:19
Thanks, Mike.
10:26
Alright, folks, I’m here with Dave Antonoch. Dave, welcome to the Game Traction podcast.
10:30
Thank you.
10:31
Yeah, I’m glad to have you. So, man, this is a pretty cool event. And then what a nice facility, huh?
10:36
Oh, yeah, big time.
10:37
Yeah.
10:37
I mean, this says a lot about Trail Tire. Putting it on right here.
10:40
Oh, for sure it does.
10:40
Yeah. So tell me, why are you part of Trail Tire and how long have you been part of Trail Tire?
10:45
We became trail tire in 2021.
10:47
Okay.
10:48
And I just like the way Allen and James approached me. Well, they didn’t approach me, I approached them. And I like to philosophy and the family.
11:00
Yeah.
11:01
And the support that I can get. Pick up the phone and make a call and someone will get back to me with. Not like it was with the previous company I was with.
11:10
So one of the things that seems like to me is you guys have an incredible amount of camaraderie here with the members. But you also, they don’t take just anybody that knocks at their door into the family, do they?
11:22
Well, and that’s the thing is they don’t go looking for people.
11:26
Yeah.
11:26
They just let like with sales, it’s out there and people come looking for them and then. Yeah, they ask the questions and they have to fit in the family.
11:34
Yeah.
11:35
And it’s really tough because it’s not like they want to grow till they have 500 stores. They want to look after and be small and not get too big, too large, too fast.
11:46
Well, and it’s. I like to use that word. And I know it sounds like you’re not really into growth, but I think it’s important it’s managed growth.
11:53
Manage it. Yes. Yeah, that’s what I wanted to say. Yeah.
11:56
Because you can grow too fast, and then you. And then everybody else hurts because you’re doing that. Because you may be looking at the bottom line and trying to get further down the tracks or whatever, but you guys all seem to be, like, just solid. You got your feet on the ground. I mean, and everybody’s. It seems like that everybody’s on the ship and heading in the same direction.
12:15
Yeah. The knowledge there is by far the most that I’ve ever seen in the. In the industry. Well, I’ve been in the industry for.
12:22
30 years, and this accessory thing that you just added seems to be like a really cool niche that’s gonna fit in here.
12:28
Yes, absolutely.
12:29
Well, I can’t say enough to Dave. Thanks for being part of Gain Traction Podcast.
12:33
Well, I appreciate you having me.
12:34
Thank you.
12:35
Yeah.
12:35
Okay.
12:40
All right, folks, I’m here with Graham Tanner. Graham, welcome to the Gain Traction podcast.
12:46
Thanks for having me. I appreciate you having me on the. On the show here for a short period.
12:50
Yeah. Well, listen, I’m blown away by this. The atmosphere here, it’s been phenomenal, but Trail Tire is one heck of a group. Why are you part of Trail Tire?
13:01
Well, originally, I’m part of it because Alan, when he expanded, he bought a company that I was part of, and I kind of came over as. As part of the package. But I’m. I’m with it because they’re a very customer driven company and they share the same values I do. Taking care of customers as best you can and in the most honest way you can.
13:26
That’s awesome. It seems like you guys have a really sharp network, but a lot of the guys that I’ve been interviewing, they say the same things. They really appreciate the leadership of this organization.
13:37
I do as well. And what they do is they recognize if you can do a job correctly and you’re taking care of it, they’ll leave you to do it and to take care of your customers because they know you well.
13:51
Well. And it’s also cool that you’re part of a network now. I mean, you’re not like one of the guys I think it was Ian said, you’re no longer an island. You’re in a really strong network. Great leadership and all boats rise with a high tide.
14:04
Absolutely. They do offer a lot of support and a lot of training abilities, and we’re having good areas where to expand into different markets and into electric vehicle maintenance and whatnot. So they’re looking forward and I like that they’re doing that.
14:21
That’s awesome. Is there anything in particular? If there was somebody sitting on the fence that Alan, Brad, those guys and James are talking to that would need to hear from a member like yourself, what would the ultimate thing be?
14:36
I think it would be that they have your, they would have your back for any situation that you need.
14:44
That’s all.
14:44
So they’re very well connected and they’re a great family to work with.
14:49
Graham, thanks for being part of the game Traction podcast.
14:51
Thanks for having me here.
14:52
Absolutely. Okay, folks, I’m here with Ryan Lean. Ryan, welcome to the gain Traction podcast.
15:03
Thanks.
15:04
Yeah, glad you’re here. So how long have you been in part of Trail Tire?
15:10
In Trail Tire? We’ve been since just this December.
15:13
Oh yeah. So you’re brand new then?
15:15
Yeah, we’re new to Trail.
15:17
Yeah. Well, what a great place to show up on the first AGM meeting, huh? Yep. I’m blown away by Lake Louise. I mean I’m a Kentucky boy and this place is a one heck of a resort.
15:28
Yeah, this is pretty much our backyard. We don’t live that far from here, so.
15:31
Oh, so you’re one of the close ones.
15:33
Oh, yeah. It was only like three hours to get here. We come up here on the weekends sometimes.
15:37
Oh man, this place is incredible. Well, so since you made the decision to join trail in December, what was the overarching this, you know, deciding factors for you?
15:50
There was a lot of them business wise. We came from another franchise that is losing a lot of stores to this franchise. There was a lot of financial problems that were having with our previous Gotcha.
16:08
So leadership organization just.
16:11
Yeah, the organization took a turn. It was good. We were in. We were with them 16 years.
16:15
So I gotcha.
16:16
You know, the first 15 were fine and then it got painful. It got painful.
16:22
They.
16:22
They changed their whole ideology of.
16:25
But you know, you still had to see something here at trail that you liked. It wasn’t just that that pain. You. You saw something here that you really liked too though, right?
16:34
Yeah, a lot of it came down to I’m a big local guy.
16:39
Yeah.
16:40
Shopping logo, like all that kind of stuff. I’ve been on fire department in our town for over 10 years. We do a ton of community stuff and come to Trail. Edmonton’s only just over an hour from us. So it’s almost like shopping local.
16:58
Yeah.
16:59
As close as we can get.
17:01
Well, and you guys have such a. I mean, and I know you’re new to the organization, but it seems like a lot of camaraderie here, a lot of friendship. Yeah.
17:08
So we actually know a lot of the people already. A lot of, like I said, a lot of stores.
17:13
Yeah.
17:14
Came over to here, so we knew a lot of people. A lot of the people in head office were in head office at our previous place.
17:23
Well, man, I can’t thank you enough, Ryan, for being part of the Gain Traction podcast.
17:27
Yeah, not a problem.
17:28
All right, have a great one. Okay, folks, I got Joe Paranich here with the trail tire. He’s the retail operations manager. Joe, welcome to the Gain Traction podcast.
17:43
Thanks, Mike. Happy to be here.
17:44
Yeah. So tell us a little bit about yourself. So how long have you been with trail?
17:48
I’ve been with trail two and a half years, but it’s kind of a long story if the history of the Canadian tire distribution. I was with a lot of these people 25 years ago.
17:59
Yeah.
17:59
Grew up with, you know, starting kicking tires off a warehouse and then on to bigger and better things and. But I bounced around a little bit and I’ve been with Trail 2 and a half years now.
18:10
So what does the retail operations manager do?
18:13
So I, I look after the retail program side of things for our locations. Making sure they’re taking advantage of everything we have available from parts programs to coveralls, point of sale material, that they’re getting the most bang for their buck to be part of the program.
18:31
That’s awesome. So basically you’re another set of eyes that they don’t have to necessarily if they don’t know everything you’re going through almost like an audit in a sense. You’re just making sure their account. They’re maximizing their opportunities.
18:43
Yeah, absolutely. And just whatever programs they’re attached to, which makes sense in their market, making sure they’re optimizing all that. That program.
18:52
So one of the products that you guys have recently merged into with Richard was the truck accessories, light truck accessories. That, that’s going to be under your umbrella as well in some sense.
19:03
Yeah, a little bit. We help set up the displays and just kind of get a feel whether they’re, you know, a, like a tow and hitch location compared to an off road location compared to like a headache rack and fleet location to get the best products in there and focused on the guys in their area that they can really attack for that stuff.
19:21
What’s the most gratifying thing about your.
19:23
Position, I think rebate checks at the end of the year for the. For the stores.
19:29
Just because everybody hugs you.
19:31
Well, you know, when you. When you can. You can show them that, like, where the actual value is, when they can see the return on what they’re getting just by simply enrolling in programs that are already available.
19:43
Yeah.
19:44
Focusing on them to the best of their ability and just seeing. Seeing where the. Where the money comes in at the end of the year.
19:49
That’s awesome.
19:50
Yeah, it’s pretty cool.
19:51
So you get to play Santa Claus sometimes.
19:53
Yeah. Yeah. Sometimes I don’t get to necessarily always deliver the checks, but I get to pass on the good news and say, hey, did you. Did you check your bank account? You should have something from this vendor or that vendor.
20:03
That’s awesome. Well, Joe, thanks for being part of the game.
20:05
Thanks, Mike.
20:06
Absolutely. Okay, folks, I’m here with James O’Reilly, the Vice President of Trail Tire. James, welcome back to the Gain Traction Podcast.
20:21
Very happy to be here, Mike. Thank you for having me again.
20:23
Yeah, well, I mean, thanks for having me here at the agm. This has been fantastic. The settings, unbelievable. Everybody’s told me, or I’ve heard it several times, this isn’t what Canada looks like everywhere. So don’t. Don’t think it’s perfect like this, but this place is perfect.
20:40
Yeah. Beautiful Lake Louise. It’s a historic hotel. And very happy. You know, six months ago, I sat on your podcast, and it was a great episode, and then ran into you at SEMA and just kind of threw the idea about having you out here to do a Trail Tire podcast series. And it was kind of like fate. Everything worked out good.
20:56
And you gave me a lot of. As the audience has just listened to several. I think we had total of seven.
21:03
Yeah.
21:04
A compilation of interviews, and it’s great. Great people. I can see a great organization here, and it’s been a pleasure interviewing them all.
21:12
Absolutely.
21:12
Yeah. An exciting group of people. You know, I never knew if they were going to be podcast people, but everyone was lined up and ready to go, and you obviously could tell they’re pretty passionate group of people.
21:22
Well, you guys have a great group. And one of the things they kept saying over and over, it seemed like every one of them were saying, it’s the people in Trail Tire that make the difference and the leadership. They’re bragging on you guys.
21:33
Okay, fair enough. That’s good. Yeah, yeah, we’re. You know, one thing I’ll Take away, I’ve been asked about it is what are you taking away from the agm? And I think the word proud is coming come to mind here first and then just truly a family and just obviously this year a lot of stuff rolling out. We’re very excited. A lot of exciting things.
21:53
Well, you guys appear, I mean and I’m sure it’s kind of like inertia. You know, you get an organization like this started, it’s harder those first couple years. But you guys really seem like you’ve got a stride going right now for sure. Momentum. And I know you guys still have a lot of growth plans so that momentum is going to continue. I could see that room just going to expand with dealers, isn’t it?
22:13
Yes, absolutely.
22:13
Yeah.
22:14
No, a lot of synergies right now. A lot of like minded people and just the dealers that we’re connecting with that want to be a part of the group are. They’ve been a perfect fit. So we’re very fortunate and we’re going to continue the momentum into 2025 and bring a few more dealers on. But 66 throughout Western Canada, it’s, you know, we’re very happy.
22:34
That’s awesome. Well, congratulations on a.
22:36
Thank you.
22:37
Great AGM 2025. We’re proud to be here, happy to have you and entire business. We’re representing them as well. So thank you for having us.
